WOMEN’S DEVELOPMENT COMMITTEE

Women Development Committees have been active in many islands since 1982. By the early 1990’s. Women Development Committees were established in each inhabited island.

Women Development Committees were the main platform that supported women’s empowerment and collective action at the community level. Women Development Committees played an important role in mobilizing women by providing an avenue for women to network, fund raise, collaborate and implement initiatives for community development.

When the Decentralization Act (7/2010), was passed, the entire framework of local governance was transformed, with a legal mandate for Women Development Committees introduced for the first time and their responsibilities significantly broadened. 

Since the passing of the Act, Women Development Committee’s election has taken place in November 2012 and the present Committee’s election has taken place in in 2015.

The main responsibilities of Women Development Committee include;

  • To make women’s aware about their fundamental rights.
  • To empower women and protect the rights of women.
  • To raise awareness about Islamic religion, among women.
  • To increase the rate of educated women.
  • To address women’s health issues.
  • To increase women’s participation in politics.
  • To create awareness among women and ensure that their fundamental rights are not violated.
  • To conduct activates for the benefit of women.
