Dr. Mohamed Muizzu, Mayor of Male' City has expressed his concern over the continued abuse of power and authority by Managing Directors of Government SOEs. Dr. Muizzu said that such abuses have now reached hitherto unseen extremes.
In his remarks during the 86th sitting of the Male' City Council, Dr. Muizzu said that STELCO had cut the power supply to the Head Office and some of the MCC's administrative office buildings.
"They cut power not because we had failed to pay the bills. The decision was taken based on hearsay and the whim of the Company MD. Public companies do not have the authority to disrupt services that are directly related to the people. It is staggering that MDs should now have the power to take such decisions unilaterally. It is unacceptable. I can understand if this was a private enterprise. STELCO is an important public utility. They have no authority to do this. There are laws governing our service delivery to the people. We have faced similar difficulties with WAMCO as well."
