The issue of public disturbance caused by loud noise during events at Malé’s Artificial Beach was discussed at the 3rd General Meeting of the Malé City Council’s 5th term.
Council members focused on the need to regulate noise after 12:00 a.m. and introduce measures to reduce inconvenience to the public.
Mayor Adam Azim stated that loud noise should be restricted after 12:00 a.m. in all public spaces, not just at Artificial Beach. He added that time limits and sound control measures could be introduced for event organizers, noting that excessive noise affects children, the elderly and students.
Maafannu South Councilor Ibrahim Laban Shareef said noise levels should be regulated at night and kept within limits even during nighttime operations to avoid disturbing residents.
Maafannu North Councilor Hussain Furushan noted that existing regulations permit the use of loudspeakers until 12:00 am. He stressed that the law does not permit disruptive sound levels. He also acknowledged the limited availability of event venues in Malé, which often leads to the use of open spaces such as Artificial Beach.
During the meeting, members agreed to explore measures to reduce sound levels if loudspeakers are used after 12:00 am while ensuring compliance with existing legal limits to minimize public disturbance. Several other councilors, including representatives from Henveiru South, Henveiru North, Maafannu Central, Galolhu South, and Vilimalé, also contributed to the discussion.
Regulation of noise at Artificial Beach is to be decided at the next council meeting.
