Data Collection Begins for Malé Urban Mobility Study

Data collection has begun for the Malé Urban Mobility Study, a project to improve the transport system of the Greater Malé Area and to make the city more pedestrian-friendly.

The study will explore the existing transport situation in Malé and practical solutions to the problems faced by the people in travelling.

The project is being implemented by the Malé City Council in partnership with the United Nations Economic and Social Commission for Asia and the Pacific (UNESCAP) under the initiative of the Mayor of Malé City Adam Azim. The project is funded by UNESCAP.

As part of the project, Katrin Luger, Section Chief of UNESCAP’s Transport Division, met Mayor Adam Azim on 29 April this year to discuss the study.

The study discusses the number of vehicles owned by residents, types of transport used, and problems of the existing transport system. The aim is to reduce traffic congestion and develop a safer, more efficient, program, and more user-friendly transportation system.

Data collection was undertaken with the participation of twenty staff members of the Community Engagement Unit of Malé City Council. The team visited more than 1,000 houses within the Greater Malé Area, including Malé, Hulhumalé and Villimalé.

The Council is also conducting an online survey alongside the household survey. The Council has put out a link to the survey, and members of the public who wish to participate in the study can do so by completing the survey via https://forms.office.com/pages/responsepage.aspx?id=DQSIkWdsW0yxEjajBLZtrQAAAAAAAAAAAAMAAMRB8s9UNlpNU1JTWjU3WFgzVURJU1M4SUZIUTBNTC4u&route=shorturl

A stakeholder workshop is also planned to discuss the findings of the study. The workshop will be held at the Meeruma Hotel on 20 and 21 July. Discussions will be held with representatives of relevant transport sector agencies based on the study’s findings.

The workshop aims to review the existing transport system in the Greater Malé Area and to discuss ways to improve disaster resilience and identify priorities for addressing the transport challenges in the region.

Please note that this is a provisional programme and the schedule of the workshops may be subject to change.
