We do not interfere in the core functions of WAMCO: Muizzu

The Mayor of Male' City, Dr. Mohamed Muizzu has stressed that the City Council do not interfere in the core functions of WAMCO.

Elaborating on the reasoning behind the MCC's decision not to renew the agreement with WAMCO, the Mayor noted that the issue had nothing to do with staffing or job opportunities, but to ensure that residents were provided with efficient municipal services in waste management.

Dr. Mohamed Muizzu revealed that over thirty million was being spent on waste management in the city, but that, by their assessment, WAMCO had failed to maintain cleanliness of public areas of the city. He assured that the City Council was not interfering in the mandate of WAMCO, and that the garbage collected by the City Council would be channeled to the collection centre of WAMCO.

"Over the past year and a half, WAMCO has billed us 45 million, and, so far, 39 million, has been paid. Every single day, we get tons of complaints from member of the public over inadequate service and our staff are having to move in and clean these public spaces and roads because WAMCO had failed to complete the tasks adequately."

The Mayor said that this arrangement was no longer sustainable or feasible. He said that it is regrettable that WAMCO had issued a statement to mislead the public on an issue that was crystal clear.
