MCC launches new 'Smart Street Lights' in collaboration with the Chinese government

The Male' City Council, in partnership with the Yunnan Province of China, has launched a new 'Smart Street Lights' installation project in Male'.

The project was launched on Monday at the Artificial Beach in Male' by the Mayor of Male', Dr. Mohamed Muizzu and the Head of Delegation of the Yunnan Province of China, Hon. Ma Zuoxin.

Speaking at the ceremony, Dr. Muizzu noted that the new smart street light poles are a gift of the Yunnan Province administration and expressed his deep appreciation to the Chinese Government for the equipment. The Mayor noted that the project underscores the close ties of friendship and collaboration between the Male' City Council and China.

In the first phase of the project, a total of 10 smart street lights were installed from artificial beach to lonuziyaaraiy park, and further installations have been planned for other streets in the capital.

"The new smart street lights equipped with the hardward for the provision of free wifi, LED screen, CCTV camera, speaker system and weather and environmental indicator monitoring sensors. In hope we can utilise the poles to beam out public service messages that would benefit the people."

Dr. Mohamed Muizzu also said the Council would announce a guideline to sell LED advertising space on the street lights, and that that Male' City Council was undertaking preliminary deliberations on the format of the new service for businesses.

Focusing on the CCTV cameras on the smart street lighting poles, the Mayor clarified that the footage would be recorded and stored in the MCC and would be available to the Police. He noted that they would be added to the current dragnet of public area CCTV grid of the MCC.

In his remarks, the Mayor thanked China, including the Chinese Embassy in Male' and the Yunnan Province administration. He also thanked the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of Maldives.

The smart street lights project conforms to the City Council's Strategic Action Plan goals in the Digital Male' segment.
