Housing for the People

Our aspiration is to cater for the housing needs of the people of Male’, including efficient land allocations for residential, social and commercial needs. In spite of the congestion in Male’, the City Council will remain steadfast in finding effective and innovative solutions to provide housing for the residents of the city through the utilization of Hulhumale’, Gulhifalhu and other land masses that make up Greater Male’. This will be achieved through close collaboration among elected Council Members from every corner of the city.

Drawing up a Land Use Plan of Male’.

Request from the Housing Ministry to devolve the land of Male’ (including roads, public areas and the industrial village allocation) to the Male’ City Council, in accordance with the Decentralisation Act.

Identify plots in Male’ that are not being utilized efficiently, to construct 2000 new housing units to allocate to the most-needy residents of the city.

Drawing up the Land Use Plan of Villimale’.

Request from the Housing Ministry to devolve the land of Villimale’ (including roads, public areas) to the Male’ City Council, in accordance with the Decentralisation Act.

Launch a 500-unit housing project in Villimale’.

Compile a comprehensive database of all residents in Male’, to include their standards and conditions of living.

Conduct a survey of living standards and conditions of residents in Male' and Villimale', to ascertain their aspirations for improved housing.

Endeavour to revise the maximum height of building in Villimale’ to 10 floors.

Establish a Local Authority Enterprise to facilitate housing for the residents of Male’.

Lobby for the reallocation of Gulhifalhu exclusively for the housing needs of the residents of Male’.

Undertake much-needed repairs and renovation of Sinamale’ and Male’ Hiyaa flats in Male’, as well as the Sinamale’ flats in Villimale’.

Complete title deed registration for residents of Sinamale’ and Male’ Hiyaa who qualify for full ownership.

Find ways to ease concerns over pending fine payments for Sinamale’ and Male’ Hiyaa flats.

Establish site office of Sinamale’ and Male’ Hiyaa flats in close proximity.

Improve safety and security in Sinamale’ and Male’ Hiyaa flats by completing ongoing project to install CCTV cameras and implement revised security policies.

Expedite transfer of registration to Hulhumale’ for eligible residents who have requested for the service.

Propose to HDC to revise the building code on Hulhumale’ to allow residents to build up to 10 floors.

Harmonise and strengthen current regulation for payment of maintenance fees in Hulhumale’ flats.

Endeavour to reduce current rentals for Hulhumale’ flats, and to find amicable solutions for rental arrears.

Formulate solutions for unutilized plots for housing projects in Hulhumale’.

Evaluate current status, effect urgent repairs and renovations and improve maintenance of all mosques in Male’.
